Introducing Cross Triathlon

Cross triathlon, or X-tri, is an off-road triathlon discipline that typically takes place over a 1 kilometre (km) swim, 20 to 30km mountain bike and 6 to 10km trail run.
The discipline first emerged in 1996 at a race in Maui, Hawaii, and later evolved into the world-renowned XTERRA series.

After four years of continental championships, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) held its first Cross Triathlon World Championship in April 2011 in Extremadura, Spain, at “The Ring” complex, an innovative outdoor sports facility with a strong sustainability and environmental focus.
After yet another successful world championship event in Sardegna, Italy, won by reigning men’s champion Ruben Ruzafa (ESP) and last year’s women’s silver medalist Flora Duffy (BER), the ITU, in cooperation with Australian outdoor event specialist In2Adventure, will host the X-tri world championships in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time since the event’s inception five years ago.

2016 Lake Crackenback ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships

The 2016 world championship weekend (November 18-20) will be held at the picturesque Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa in the iconic Snowy Mountains of New South Wales – the same location that hosted the 2015 Oceania Triathlon Union (OTU) Oceania Championships won by two-time Olympian Courtney Atkinson (AUS) and fellow compatriot and 2012 Olympic silver medalist triathlete Erin Densham in February.
Starting at an altitude of 1200m above sea level, the course (1500m / 30km / 10km) will present a unique challenge to competitors with the stream-fed, fresh alpine waters of Lake Crackenback, the fast flowing single track of the mountain bike course and a challenging trail run with Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko, as the backdrop.
